How to Staycation in Cornwall in 2021

Why Cornwall is the best place to book your 2021 staycation

Need we say more!

2020 has been a tough year, but even in more normal times we all love to look forward to a holiday – leave day to day life behind as we take to the air and head for exotic locations. With things how they are it doesn’t seem sensible to bank on holidays abroad in 2021, so bring on the second year of the staycation!

There are some beautiful and exotic places right on our doorstep here in the UK, and Cornwall has got to be near the top of that list. Award winning beaches, rolling countryside, peaceful woodlands, and wild moors. Cornwall really does have something for everyone and we've done some research to help get you started planning your perfect staycation in Cornwall.

1. For relaxing

Family holidays can’t often be described as peaceful, but if you get the kids onto a Cornish beach with rockpools, surfing and sand dunes, you might just get the time to relax and read your book. Plus with RNLI lifeguard cover, if you follow beach rules, the little ones can roam free in safety. Grab some pasties and a bucket and spade in town on the way and you’re set for the day.

Our top 3 beaches near us are

  • Summerleaze, Bude

  • Crooklets, Bude

  • Widemouth Bay, Bude

If you’re staying at Woodview Campsite you can carry this tranquillity all the way through to bedtime. With free Wi-Fi and extensive games room onsite, the kids will stay entertained whilst you relax in a hammock by the firepits with a well deserved glass of wine.

2. For outdoor activities

Cornwall is the sort of place where you just want to be outside, and as well as the beaches there are lots of other beauty spots and ways to see them.

A family bike ride along the Bude cycle paths is a great way to see the countryside. If you haven’t brought your own you can hire bikes at Bude Bike Hire where they can also advise on routes. One brings you out on Bude Canal where you can swap the bikes for a rowboat or pedlo on the water, as well as enjoy tea and cake from The Barge café.

If you like going on a good old hike, pack a picnic and head to stunning Dartmoor National Park in Devon. The website is great for giving ideas depending upon what you want. There are lots of great walks around ruins, reservoirs, woods and waterfalls, or you can opt for one of the museums, gardens or activity centres if you prefer something a bit more structured.

Of course, there are activities at the Beach as well. Widemouth, Summerleaze and Crooklets all have surfing and SUP coaches you can book in with, or just grab your body board and go for it! If you want to stay by the sea but want something a bit more exhilarating, why not give coasteering a try. Guided by experts they’ll take you on a rock climbing/swimming tour of the North Cornish coast, giving a perspective you won’t get any other way.

Keeping things on the water but moving inland, Tamar Lakes offers kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, sailing and windsurfing. And for those members of the family who would rather keep things at a slower pace, there are great walks around the lakes and nature reserve.

If you stay at Woodview Campsite all these activities are easily accessible and we can provide advice on any specific seasonal events that may be happening too.

3. For indoor activities

A little word of warning, this is the UK so whilst Cornwall is one of the mildest parts of the country, the weather is never guaranteed. Luckily, we’ve got you covered there too.

If you’re staying a Woodview Campsite we have a huge games room onsite with ping pong, badminton, pool table, widescreen TV, and lots of toys. There is also a separate indoor football pitch as well as free Wi-Fi across the site.

If you want to venture off site, there’s still lots to keep the kids entertained indoors.

The Milky Way adventure park is just 20 minutes away with lots of indoor activities as well as epic outdoor rides and rollercoasters. They have also won plaudits for the effort they have put in to keep people safe during the pandemic whilst staying open.

In Bude there is 10 pin bowling and soft play on offer at The Venue. Grab drinks and food from the bar and make a night of it under the neon lights.

Or just next door is Splash, Bude’s swimming pool and leisure centre. With flume and wave machine in the 25m pool, there’s hours of entertainment here.

Just outside Bude is The Rebel cinema. This quaint little theatre has just 2 screens and is super cute. So, if there’s a block buster release during your stay, you don’t have to miss out as the Rebel will have you covered.

4. For culture

Cornwall and Devon are places of great historic interest, so why not pack a little culture into your trip by visiting one of the many locations near Woodview Campsite.

Tintagel Castle has links to King Arthur as well as rugged and awe inspiring scenery. Head South to Tintagel for the day and find out all about this unique place. If you head North from Woodview you will quickly come upon Clovelly. This ancient village sits on a hill running down to the fishing harbour and beach at the bottom. It is truly picturesque and a lovely place to explore as you soak up the history dating back to the 1200s.

If you’re a green fingered person there are lots of National Trust and RHS places to visit in Cornwall and Devon. One of our favourites is RHS Rosemoor with its perfect blend of formal and informal plantings. You’ll definitely come away inspired to refresh you own garden!

Hartland Abbey and Gardens are also close by. This magnificent house and grounds have been used many times for filming, including the recent Netflix adaptation of Rebecca and the BBCs Mallory Towers series. They also managed to keep open air theatre going during the recent pandemic. We would recommend checking out what they’ve got on during your stay at Woodview Campsite.

Staying at Woodview Campsite gives you access to glorious Cornwall and Devon, as well as excellent onsite facilities. It is a small, family run campsite, so we would advise booking early if you can. We’re always happy to advise about “what’s on” locally during your stay and help you have a staycation to remember.
